Emmys: Online Shows Head Nominations List Jul 18th 2013, 14:55

Online series and Hollywood stars are among the headliners in this year's Emmy Awards contest.

Two Netflix shows - House of Cards and Arrested Development - could make history by becoming the first online programmes to compete for major series and acting honours at the awards in Los Angeles.

The most Emmy nominations - 17 - went to American FX show American Horror Story: Asylum.

But close behind was Game of Thrones - shown on Sky Atlantic - with 16 and then Saturday Night Live and the Liberace biopic Behind The Candelabra, starring Michael Douglas and Matt Damon, earned 15 nominations each.

Among the British actors nominated are Downton Abbey's Michelle Dockery and Hugh Bonneville - with the series also getting a nomination for outstanding drama series - and Homeland's Damian Lewis.

British Hollywood stars were also represented in the mini-series or movie category, with Benedict Cumberbatch nominated for his role as Christopher Tietjens in Parade's End, Toby Jones for his portrayal of Alfred Hitchcock in The Girl and Helen Mirren getting a nod for her role as Linda Kenney-Baden in Phil Spector.

Other Brits up for awards include Maggie Smith, Diana Rigg and Cat Deeley.

The 65th Primetime Emmy Awards will be presented on September 22 at the Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles by Neil Patrick Harris.
