Old Etonians Dominic West and Prince Harry will compete against each other in a race to the South Pole later this year.

The Wire actor will be up against Harry and his team of wounded British servicemen and women in the 208-mile (335km) Walking With The Wounded South Pole Allied Challenge.

West will be a member of the Commonwealth team, made up of wounded servicemen and women from Canada and Australia.

There is also a third team from the United States in the trek, which is taking place in November and December.

West, who is best known for his role as Jimmy McNulty in The Wire, said he has been trying to get ready for the event.

"I agreed to do a walk to the South Pole with these wounded soldiers in December, so I'm trying to train for that at the moment," he said.

The Sheffield-born actor has already completed "secret training" on glaciers in Iceland, according to a Walking with the Wounded spokesman.

"He will be joining the Commonwealth team as a celebrity team mentor," the spokesman said.

"He will be taking part in the full trek to the Pole, enduring gruelling conditions of up to minus 50 degrees.

"In fact, he has spent a week in Iceland for secret training on glaciers with his team and only got back on Thursday night."

Harry confirmed in April he will be taking part with Team UK - also known as Team Glenfiddich - for the whole race.

He took part in the charity's trek to the North Pole in 2011, but had to withraw early to attend his brother's wedding.

He also missed out on a bid to conquer Mount Everest with the group last year because of his military commitments.

But he is certain he will be there for the Antarctic challenge.

"The format may be different. The scale is certainly different," he said.

"But the aim remains the same - to enable our wounded to do what they and all other servicemen and women do better than anyone else I know - meet a challenge head-on and overcome it and inspire others to do the same."
